Common wisdom for these about sections of websites use to say “Tell the visitor about your qualifications and about the business and how you can satisfy their needs so they will hire you.”
In the last year or so, at least with photographers websites, the common wisdom has changed. “Tell the visitor who you are, let them get to know you as a person and let your images on your site speak for themselves. Let your rates page tell of your packages (if you offer packages) and your rates and how you will satisfy their needs. Let the about page be about you as a person.”
So that is what I am going to do here. You will find out in time, after talking to me what my qualifications are. My images will show you that I am qualified to be your photographer. The details of how I became qualified are not so important.
Well, obviously my name is Troy and I am 46 years old, soon to be 47, my birthday is in September. I was widowed a little over three years ago and that was a very difficult time for me. I am now in love again with a great lady and she has a family that I also love very much. Having lost my wife the way I did, suddenly and without warning only a few months after we were married, has made me a much more sensitive person. There was so much we didn’t get to do together and so many moments that were not captured in pictures. I see the little moments in life as being of paramount importance. Those are the moments I try to catch in my photos now with the people who choose me to be their photographer.
Weddings are a beginning of two lives being joined as one, the start of a “family” and it is a day of supreme importance, one that is usually the culmination of much hard work and planning. I try to tell the whole story of the whole day, so that the couple can later relive their wedding, the joy, the excitement, the little struggles, the love and the support of friends, and the fun. I try to capture all that in the day I spend with the couple.
Same with engagement photos, I try to capture the real people behind the faces and the smiles and the eyes, so that when the couple see those pictures they can remember how happy they were to be together that day, remember why they fell in love in the first place, remember the humor of the other person.
Maternity photos, ah now that should go without saying. Maternity photos are all about showing the beauty of life. Not just the beauty of an expectant mother, but of LIFE. Later baby pictures show the emerging personality of the child, not just what the child looks like.
Glamour shots, those I try to show the beauty that lives in every one of us. For we are all beautiful, it is just that sometimes we forget. The world tries to tell us we need to look a certain way, wear a certain kind of clothes, be a certain way, all to be beautiful. Who made “them” the beauty police? Everyone is beautiful, and I try to reconnect the person in front of my lens with that beauty they sometimes forget they have.
Senior portraits, now those are a milestone, a rite of passage in our society that makes the coming of age, that all important graduation from high school and starting life as an adult. Again I try to show the person that lives inside the skin, not just what they looked like when they were on the cusp of adulthood.
I see all my different forms of photography not as just taking pictures, but that I am apart of that person’s life for that time they are in front of my camera. They are someone with hopes and dreams and aspirations. They are interesting people that I have the privilege to get to know a little and I want to show the person they are, inside their skin.
Sometimes that is done just letting them play with props, or just getting them to talk to me. I just keep shooting as they tell me a story or listen to someone off camera talk. I try to get them when their guard is down and being who they really are.
I don’t really do portraits. I do more character studies of the people I take pictures of. I don’t pose the people very much, I just let them relax and be themselves and only tweak or refine their pose. I tend to shoot everyone as if they are a model. Maybe because I started out in this people photography stuff working with models. It seems to work, people seem to let their guard down and have fun and we get pictures of the people they really are, rather than just what they look like.
Guess I haven’t really told you a lot about me have I? Or haven’t I? I let you in to my heart, seeing why it is that I do what I do. To capture those important moments in a person life is a very special thing, something most people don’t get to do. Because I have a passion for making images of people I am privileged to do exactly that, capture moments in a very important and interesting persons life. To give people images that help them remember who they were when that image was made and what they were thinking and feeling. If you read this with your heart and mind open then you have come to know me.
Oh I guess I should mention I live with a Main Coon Cat named Tribble. He is a very friendly fellow. He will meet you at the door if you come to my little home studio for studio work. He greets everyone and then supervises the shoot, usually laying in the middle of the floor where I have to step over or around him while I work. Be prepared for at least one screech cause he usually gets stepped on at least once every shoot. Think he would learn after all these years and all the photo shoots I have had in that little home studio to stay well out of my way, wouldn’t you? He just loves to be in on all the actions. Of course he thinks whenever someone is sitting or lying on the floor posing that they are down there because they want to pet him. He is just such a lover.
